Injury Update and the Depth Chart

There is good news on the injury front. Rob Howe of HawkeyeInsider.com posted a recap from Coach Ferentz's weekly call-in radio show last night. The most important piece of information from the post is that most of the players that sat out last week due to injury should be ready to play this week against Iowa State. Adam Gettis, Shaun Prater, Jeff Tarpinian, and Josh Koeppel are all expected to be available on Saturday. Daniel Murray, who has been having issues with a hip flexor, was the only injured player not mentioned. The Hawkeyes will also have two players back from 1-game suspensions: Jewel Hampton and Broderick Binns.

Hawkeye Recruit Roundup: Week 2

This week featured two future Hawkeyes going head-to-head, and 2 that played in the same stadium just hours apart. Melvin Gordon and Jacob Rudock were the two commits that stood out the most this week. Gordon averaged over 24 yards per carry and Rudock had 3 TDs (2 passing and 1 rushing). Overall, the Hawkeye recruits went 7-5 in week 2 of high school football.

Ray Hamilton
L Mentor 38 - Strongsville 17 | (0-2)
After having a quite week last week, Ray Hamilton had a big night on Friday. He hauled in 11 receptions for 146 yards and a TD. Strongsville's quarterback completed 20 passes, so over half of those were to Hamilton. However, Hamilton's big night wasn't enough as Strongsville lost 17 to 38.

Next Game: vs. Padua Franciscan - 09/10

Austin Blythe
W Mt. Pleasant 21 - Williamsburg 38 | (2-0)
Blythe squared off against fellow Iowa commit Henry Krieger-Coble. Williamsburg scored 3 touchdowns in a row in the second half that put the game out of reach. There were no mentions of Blythe that I could find.

Next Game: at Mt. Vernon - 09/10

Henry Krieger-Coble
L Mt. Pleasant 21 - Williamsburg 38 | (0-2)
Though Mt. Pleasant lost, Krieger-Coble had a nice night collecting 7 receptions for 108 yards including a 46-yard TD pass at the beginning of the second half. You can see the touchdown in the highlights provided by KCRG (Krieger-Coble is #80).

Next Game: vs. Fairfield - 09/10

Austin Vincent
W DeSoto 49 - Arlington Bowie 21 | (2-0)
This game was part of the Kirk Herbstreit National Kickoff Classic that took place last night in the new Cowboys Stadium (Jacob Rudock also played in a Herbstreit game in Cowboys stadium earlier in the night). DeSoto scored on 5 first half possessions in a row and took a 35-14 lead into halftime. Austin Vincent had 3 catches for 43 yards and a 19-yard touchdown.

Next Game: vs. Miramar - 09/11

Jacob Rudock
W St. Thomas Aquinas 31 - Skyline 3 | (2-0)
In one of the other Kirk Herbstreit National Kickoff Classic games, Rudock led St. Thomas Aquinas to an easy victory. Rudock was 10 of 14 for 230 yards with no interception. He had touchdown passes of 44 and 8 yards and also ran in a touchdown from 1 yard out.

Next Game: at Boyd Anderson - 09/16

Jake Duzey
L Athens 3 - Pontiac 42 | (1-1)
Athens fumbled the opening kick off, gave up a touchdown the next play and things never got better. They were down 30-3 at the end of the first quarter, and had a running clock in the second half. Duzey did not have a bad game, but was largely ineffective this week. He ran the ball 3 times for a total of -9 yards (he had only 1 positive rushing play for 2 yards). He caught 6 passes, but those only amounted to 28 yards. He returned 1 punt for 4 yards and 3 kickoffs for 23 yards. To top it off he also lost a fumble. In all he averaged just 3.5 yards per touch.

Next Game: vs. Clarkston - 09/10

Riley McMinn
W Jacksonville 14 - Rochester 46 | (2-0)
Rochester had another big offensive showing in a route of Jacksonville on Friday. There was no mention of McMinn in any articles I could find.

Next Game: vs. Jersey - 09/10

Cole Fisher
W Burke 10 - Millard North 21 | (1-1)
Millard North ran for 318 yards in a Thursday night victory. No mentions of Fisher were found.

Next Game: vs. Omaha Central - 09/10

Jordan Walsh
W Glenbard West 21 - Downers Grove South 16 | (2-0)
Glenbard West, led by its offensive line, powered it's way to victory last Friday. The Hilltoppers two top rusher combined for 267 yards. This is the second week in a row that the O-line, led by Walsh, has been mentioned as a key reason for the win.

Next Game: at Hinsdale Central - 09/10

Melvin Gordon
W Bradford 48 - Stevens Point 17 | (2-0)
Gordon had an absolutely huge night for Bradford as the Red Devils ran over the number 2 ranked Stevens Point Panthers. With just 12 carries he ran for 291 yards and had touchdowns of 71, 56, 59, and 44 yards. He scored on both of his first two runs and ended the night averaging almost 25 yards per rush.

Next Game: vs. Park - 09/10

Torrey Campbell
L Barron Collier 7 - Immokalee 13 | (0-2)
Barron Collier fumbled away its hope to win this game on a 1st-and-goal from the 1-yard line. After going 9-2 last year and winning their division, Barron Collier is off to a bad start. Campbell did have an okay game though. He rushed the ball 7 times for 78 yards and the team's lone score that came late in the 4th quarter and was set up by a 90-yard kickoff return.

Next Game: vs. Choice Learning Academy - 09/10

John Raymon
L Father Judge 22 - Council Rock North 14 | (0-1)
Council Rock North lost its star running back to injury early in the game and never quite recovered. No mentions of Raymon were found.

Next Game: at Central Bucks South - 09/10

Did not play:
  • Mike Orloff & Marcus Grant - Lawrence Academy | Next Game: vs. Milton - 09/25

Ferentz Presser and Koeppel on Today

Another Tuesday, another Kirk Ferentz press conference. There were way too many questions about the Iowa-Iowa State rivalry that were all answered in typical Ferentz fashion. Hawkeyesports.com as always provides you with the full transcript of the presser, but all the important stuff is below.

Notes
Captains: Same as last week - Stanzi, Vandervelde, Clayborn, and Klug

Injuries: First of all, Stanzi is fine. So there's nothing to worry about there. Prater (hamstring), Murray (hip flexor), Tarpinian (hand), and Gettis (ankle) all have a shot at getting back in this week. Josh Koeppel was cleared to play last week, but Ferentz held him out. He will be ready to play on Saturday if needed (or in mop-up duty).

PAKI: Paki O'Meara earned the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week for his blocked punt returned for a touchdown. Ferentz is happy for him, as am I. Paki has definitely put in his dues over the years so it's nice to see him earn some recognition.

Seriously please stop asking about Wegher: Enough already.

Hampton and Robinson: Hampton will get his share of carries on Saturday, but Ferentz hasn't figured out how he plans on splitting the load. Personally I believe Robinson earned the right to start based on his performance against EIU, but hope they do an every-other series thing like last year until one of them (I think it'll be Hampton) separates himself.

MacMillan and Nielsen: Two players that Ferentz was particularly pleased with after watching the film were first time starters Nolan MacMillan and Tyler Nielsen. I didn't notice MacMillan a lot from my seats 78 rows up, which for an offensive lineman is probably a good thing. I did think Nielsen played excellent, especially making plays on the edges.

The D-Line is ready: Ferentz said that he wouldn't need to say much to motivate the defensive line to play better than last year's game against ISU. A game in which Iowa's defense gave up 190 rushing yards and the Cyclone's offensive line much man-handled Clayborn and Co. Don't expect that to happen again. The defensive has been watching film and will be out to prove that they are the best line in the country.

Fluff: There were the questions about Rhoads, about the rivalry, at Arnaud, etc... They all elicited the typical "well-coached" and "tough game" type of responses.

BlogPoll: Week 1

My BlogPoll ballot will normally come out every Monday during the season, but this week it's a day late due to the Boise State-Virginia Tech game that was played last night. At this very early point in the season my rankings reflect both on-field performance and expectations for the season as a whole. If I was a voting based on performance only, then Boise State would probably be number 1, Michigan would be ranked in the top 10, and Oklahoma wouldn't be anywhere near making the cut. So, I'm trying to balance it with how I project the season to go for each team.

1 - 5
Ohio State: I still believe the Buckeyes are the most complete team. They have a strong returning defense, an experience quarterback, and the overall talent to make a national championship run. Most people's biggest question was about Terrelle Pryor, who put in a nice game last Thursday.
Boise State: Well, they won the toughest game on their schedule, and I expect they will win the next 11 games too. I think there is definitely the possibility for teams to pass the Broncos once conference play starts and others will have a more robust resume of wins.
Alabama: I am still not sold on Bama's defense, but until they lose I'm keeping them near the top.
Nebraska: This one is more about expectations than performance. Nebraska played well in a win over Western Kentucky and seems to have their QB question answered. But what really helps them out is that their two biggest challengers for the Big 12 crown, Oklahoma and Texas, played relatively poor and struggled to beat lesser foes.
TCU: TCU has a big win over a decent Oregon State and with their schedule, they also have a good shot at going undefeated. Like Boise State though, as other teams start playing tough conference match ups I expect TCU to slide down some.

6 - 10
Iowa, Oregon, Wisconsin, Miami, and Texas all took care of business this week. Oregon moved up a couple of spots after a ridiculous 72-0 victory. Texas slid down after struggling to put away a not-so-good Rice team. Iowa, Wisconsin, and Miami all looked good against easier teams.

11 - 15
Florida struggled mightily on offense so got bumped out of the top ten. Oklahoma's struggles were on defense as they eked out a win against Utah State, so I moved them down too. The biggest climber was Utah as they have a nice win over previously ranked Pitt. Penn State and Georgia Tech both won big, so moved up a couple spots.

16 - 25
There was not a lot of movement in the bottom of the top 25. Team's that lost dropped out, expect for Virginia Tech who I think could still have a really good season. USC moved down after giving up over 500 yards of offense and 36 points to Hawaii. If they don't get that fixed, Oregon might have another 72-point game coming its way. LSU had a win over a ranked team, but really they should not have had the struggles they did against a decimated North Carolina team.

I didn't give all my justifications, but hopefully enough that my rankings make sense. This is still in draft stage until Wednesday morning, so let me know what you think.

Eastern Illinois Recap by the Numbers

3
Jason White ran in at running back wearing the number 3 on his jersey. He had just one carry that came late in the fourth quarter when Iowa had already wrapped things up. The message was loud and clear: Brandon Wegher is not coming back. The coaches not only gave away his number, but gave it away to another running back. Let's hope he works through what he needs to, keeps up with his school, and rejoins the team next year ready to go.

8 of 8
Ricky Stanzi had a tough time last year at the onset of games. It was pretty much the same script every week...starts out slow, throw a pick, and then play great in the 4th quarter. Saturday was different though. Stanzi came out on fire and was a perfect 6 of 6 before he went down with the knee injury scare. He came back in the next series and completes his next 2 passes before his first incomplete pass...good for an 8 of 8 start. Hopefully this is a sign on things to come. If Iowa can come out and get an early lead, I think that'd help out the heart health of Hawkeye fans every.

1.2
If you take out the fake punt that caught Iowa off guard and ended in a 36 yard gain, EIU gained only 29 yards on the ground. That's an average carries of just 1.2 yards. At times it seemed like the defensive line was rather quite, but if you look at the numbers, they really did dominate the line of scrimmage.
