Iowa vs. Arizona: Last Year

I have any don't really anything for this morning, so here's the highlights from last year's game. Really this game wasn't as close as the score indicated. Let's hope for a similar game tomorrow.

Iowa at Arizona: Statistics

Diving too deep into statistics is a little pointless after just two games, but taking a quick look does provide a small piece of insight on how the two teams match up. Both Iowa and Arizona have put up some big numbers playing in lopsided games against lower-tier competition thus far. It is safe to say that both teams will face a better test this weekend.

Arizona's defense has been absolutely dominant thus far. They have not given up a single touchdown and the only two scores that came on the defense were two late field goals against The Citadel. They have been stifling against the pass and held The Citadel to just 22 yards through the air. The run defense has been slightly less effective as Toledo's running back averaged 5.0 yards per carry and The Citadel's averaged 4.8.

Iowa has been cruising along on offense as well as I can ever remember this early in the season. Stanzi has been sharp thus far but will need to be patient and smart against Arizona's talented secondary. Iowa should have an advantage running the ball. Robinson has been averaging 7.0 yards per carry in his two games and Hampton averaged 4.2 last week. If Iowa can match the average of the two backs Arizona has faced thus far, then it should help Iowa's offense immensely.

Overall Advantage: Pretty even...slight advantage to Arizona in the air, slight advantage to Iowa on the ground

It's a Hawkeye Football Nation: Love it or Leave it

This was simply too awesome not to post. A picture of the senior poster for the Iowa football team was tweeted earlier today by @HawkeyeFootball and has quickly made its way around the internet. Marc Morehouse has the story behind the poster.

Now if we could just figure out where to find one of these.

Ferentz Presser: Quick Notes

I don't have time for a long post this morning, so I just have some quick notes from Coach Ferentz's press conference yesterday.  The official website provides the full transcript.

Injury
Jason White: White was injured during kickoff coverage against ISU. He will be out a few weeks for a knee injury.
Adam Gettis and Daniel Murray: Both are expected to practice and could be ready to play on Saturday.

Norm
Not traveling to Tucson: Coach Parker, who was hospitalized last week right before the game, is still recovering and is not expected to make the trip out to Arizona. For Iowa State, he was able to instill his game plan during the week and then linebacker coach Darrell Wilson called the actual plays on Saturday. This week it'll be a collaborative effort amongst the defensive coaches to put together and execute a game plan for Arizona. Ferentz says that "everybody picks up the slack."

Captains
The same: Clayborn, Klug, Stanzi, and Vandervelde.

On Arizona
QB: Foles is not much of a running quarterback, but is very good passing the ball and getting it in the hands of playmakers.
OL: Big, strong and productive.
Heat: If it's 90, but the sun is down it should be fine. The players will hydrate all week. It shouldn't be much different than some of the hot days of August in Iowa.
Time zone: Don't expect Iowa to play any more games out west during Ferentz's tenure. It's mostly a pain for the coaches staying up that late and staying sharp. The college kids like it.

Actual Football Discussion
D-Line: There will continue to be a rotation and Ferentz hopes they can get up to 7 guys in the mix.
O-Line: Gettis may or may not work his way back in to a starting spot. MacMillan has played well. The unit has also performed ahead of schedule.
More rotations: Robinson and Hampton will continue to alternate series for the time being. Ferentz is pleased with both of their performances thus far.
Stanzi: Stanzi has been working as hard as anyone. Couple that with maturation and he's come out sharp at the beginning of games (a problem last year) and hasn't thrown an interception (a BIG problem last year). Ferentz actually wasn't aware of Stanzi's no picks, or was being coy.

Hawkeye Recruit Roundup: Week 3

It was another good week for the Hawkeye recruits with only 2 losses on the board. There were a lot of good games, like DeSoto's 1-point OT win. And there were also some blowouts, like Barron Collier's defensive domination that forced 4 safeties. Jake Duzey gets my player of the week award for his 7 catches for 143 yards and scored his team's lone touchdown in a loss.

Ray Hamilton
W Padua Franciscan 14 - Strongsville 28 | (1-2)
Hamilton had a nice night in Strongsville first win of the season. On the night he caught five passes for 65 yards and a touchdown. You can see two of his catches in this highlight video from the game (Hamilton is #11). He also has a good post on his blog about learning from mistakes that he wrote after losing last week to Mentor.

Next Game: At Hudson - 09/17

Austin Blythe
W Williamsburg 48 - Mt. Vernon 0 | (3-0)
Williamsburg won its third straight game soundly. The game in the trenches and were led by Blythe. From the Press Citizen about Blythe, "the 6-foot-3, 290 pound senior played both ways Friday night but was especially disruptive on the defensive side of the ball." The Raider's defense held Mt. Vernon to 0 yards on 32 rushing attempts.

Next Game: vs. Grinnell - 09/17
