Who’s that with Hayden Panettiere?

Paul Rust and Hayden Panettiere in their upcoming movie I Love You Beth Cooper.

It’s none other than Paul Rust! Okay…so you are probably wondering, who the heck is Paul Rust and what does he have to do with Iowa Football. I admit, this post is slightly (okay very) off topic, but I just felt compelled to post it and honestly there isn't much football news right now. I was watching TV last night and a commercial comes on for this new Hayden Panettiere movie, I Love You Beth Cooper. (Hey, Hayden Panettiere was in Remember the Titans, so that's kind of football related. Also, the picture on the right is from the movie is well) Well yeah, the movie looks pretty bad, but it’s based off a popular book by the same title and is about a nerdy dude who proclaims his love for the popular girl and so on and so on. What caught my eye about this movie was (no, not Hayden Panettiere) the nerdy dude…he looked so familiar. So I looked him up on IMDB and figured it out . It's Paul Rust, my crazy RA from my freshman year at Iowa in 2002 (so I associate him with the best football season I can remember).

Paul, an avid Herky the Hawk fan, attended the University of Iowa from 2000 to 2004. While attending Iowa he was a writer/performer for No Shame Theatre and a member of the rock opera band My Business Failed in Three Weeks. The underappreciated garage band I was in during highschool, Link's Final Conquest, once opened for MBF3W which probably ruined Paul's career as a musician. But he has gone on to bigger and better things and has probably long forgot about his RA days at Iowa.

So, good luck to Paul and maybe I'll catch your movie someday when it's on Starz! On Demand. And, my next post will be Iowa Football related, so don't worry.

Big Ten Network: Iowa Day 2

This is just a reminder that the second Iowa Day on the Big Ten Network is on right now. Here is the full schedule of the Iowa TV. There are 3 football games on today that you should check out:
7:00 AM - Iowa vs. Michigan (1990)
12:00 PM - Iowa vs. LSU (2005, Capitol One Bowl)
9:00 PM - Iowa at Penn State (2002)

Commit #6 for 2010 - Austin Vier

After attending Iowa's summer camp this week, Austin Vier from Huxley, Iowa verbally committed to the Hawkeyes. Vier becomes the second in-state commit (the first being James Morris, a linebacker from Solon) for the 2010 class. Vier is being recruited as an athlete and is projected to play either quarterback and tight end. At 6'7" he would be one of the tallest players on the team (only offensive lineman Matt Tobin would be taller at 6'8").

High School: In his junior year as a Ballard Bomber, Austin Vier was 57 of 118 (48.3%) on passes and passed for a total of 661 yards. He also threw for 6 touchdowns, but had 12 interceptions. Though those numbers aren't great, he did lead the team to a 3A Sub-state birth where they lost to Clear Lake. Vier is also on the basketball team (makes sense since he's 6'7") and averaged 10.7 points per game last year.

Kyle Calloway gets an OWI

Early this morning Iowa OT Kyle Calloway got picked up for an OWI. Early reports are that he was riding a moped under the influence. While it may be hilarious to picture a 315 pound drunk man riding a moped, this isn't really a laughing matter (though I might have laughed on the inside a little). Calloway is probably facing a multiple game suspension if Kirk Ferentz handles it like Shaun Prater, who was arrested for an OWI early this year.

The Bad:
While Iowa's offensive line is extremely deep, there is not a lot of backup experience at the offensive tackle position. Calloway's backup is currently listed as Markus Zusevics, who has only played in 2 games in his career (Florida International and South Carolina). The other backup tackle is Riley Reiff, who is just a redshirt freshman. There is a slew of interior linemen with experience and some even have tackle experience. However if Julian Vandervelde is injured, then it may be less likely that someone would slide to the outside while Calloway is sitting on the bench.

The Not So Bad:

At least this happened in the summer and not during the Big Ten Season. The Big Ten is full of very good defensive ends this year and I would not want a very inexperienced tackle trying to protect Stanzi against a rush from Corey Wootton or Brandon Graham. Instead the backup tackles will likely gain valuable experience early in the year against the less intimidating defenses of UNI or Iowa State (not to knock UNI or Iowa State too much, but their defenses will probably not be the best defenses Iowa plays this year).

So we will just have to wait and see what Kirk Ferentz decides to do. I'd guess a 2 game suspension and that we will see Calloway return for the Arizona game.

The BTN Awards - Congrats Shonn Greene

Okay, so the Big Ten Network Awards are about as meaningful as the Teen Choice Awards. I watched the show anyway though since the Hawkeyes were up for a handful of awards. Iowa Football was well represented with nominations for Best Finish (Penn State game), Men's Coach of the Year (Kirk Ferentz), Breakout Performance of the Year (Shonn Greene), Game of the Year (Penn State game), and Men's Team of the Year (the football team...if that wasn't obvious). Iowa's only winner was Shonn Greene. Congratulation Shonn! I'm sure this award ranks right up there with the Doak Walker Award. Anyway, here is a list of all the winners. It's hard to argue with any of the choices, but I thought the Iowa-Penn State game had a chance at the Best Finish and even Best Game (it was my favorite anyway). Here's the video of Shonn Greene accepting his award.

Put a shirt on Shonn!
