Is MSU Third Best?
Finally, somebody else agrees with me. Michigan State is not the 3rd best team in the conference...it's Iowa.

Big Ten position rankings - Secondary
Rittenberg likes Iowa's defense. And why wouldn't he with 8 returning starters from the 5th best scoring defense. He has Iowa with the best secondary, second best linebackers (behind PSU), and the third best defensive line (behind OSU and PSU). I would say that equates to the best overall defense. Here's his blurb on why he picked Iowa's secondary as the best:
Three starters return from a unit that helped Iowa lead the Big Ten in takeaways (32) and allow the fewest passing touchdowns (9) in 2008. Junior Amari Spievey is the league's best cover corner, and he'll be joined by safety Tyler Sash, who shared the league lead in interceptions with teammate Pat Angerer last fall. Bradley Fletcher will be missed and depth is a mini concern, but the back four will anchor Iowa's D.

On Iowa - Paint it or Keg it
I know, I know...I keep posting about painting the water tower. There's a pretty funny photoshop in this linked post so check it out. Also, if you haven't, sign the petition.

Mackey Award Watch List
Iowa's tight end Tony Moeaki has made the preseason watch list for the 2009 John Mackey Award. The watch list is comprised of 30 players including 6 from the Big Ten. Moeaki, who has been plagued by injuries, is ready to have a great season and lead the team to a Big Ten Championship. And, he certainly has the potential to do so. In 2005, he was the number 1 tight end recruit in the country, and when healthy, he has shown why with a career 46 catches for 566 yards and seven TDs.

Media Fact Book
In case you have about 10 hours to kill, he is the Media Fact Book for the 2009 Iowa Football Season. It's 205 page full of Hawkeye glory, including bios, stats, previews, factoids, and just about anything else you can imagine. I'm on about page 30 myself.

Water Tower Petition
I know I just posted about painting the Kinnick water tower a couple of days ago, but I thought I'd re-share the link to the petition in case anyone missed it. As of 12:30 PM August 2 there are 2,366 signatures. There are a couple more good ones on there too including a previous player and a previous president:

1891. George W Bush - If you could paint it with, um, those, um Weapons of Massiveness Destructionism we never did find in Iraqistan
1857. Brad Banks - TIGER HAWK

Angerer Among Big Ten's Best
Here's a good article from the Quad City Times on Pat Angerer. It highlights his high school years up through last season. I don't have a lot to say about it other than to give it a read.

Fight For Iowa talks to On Wisconsin

Appropriately named On Wisconsin posted its preseason preview of the Iowa Hawkeyes which features a Q&A session with none-other-than myself. Anyway give it a read. Duff @ On Wisconsin had some pretty good questions for me, including one on Bielema's Tigerhawk tattoo. I look to do something similar asking questions about Wisconsin in the future, so check back for that. It'll probably be right before the Wisconsin game.

Fight For Iowa on Twitter

Okay, so I don't have the same level of dislike for Twitter that Kirk Ferentz has, but I think it's way over-hyped. Despite that fact, Fight For Iowa is now (actually has been for a while) on Twitter. So for updates on new posts, some of my random Iowa Football thoughts, and any quick information that's not worthy of an entire post, follow me at http://twitter.com/FightForIowa.

Wear Gold to UNI and Blackout Arizona

The University of Iowa has officially announced its 2 color-themed games for the 2009 football season. While, the "Be Bold, Wear Gold" game against UNI has been known for a while, this is the first official announcement I've seen. The idea for this event is to coincide with FRYFEST. It should be a fun day and should be warm enough where the fans can actually just wear their gold t-shirts (because seriously, who has a gold coat?).

"Blackout Saturday" is schedule for the third week of the year for the game against Arizona. This game is definitely the most anticipated of the non-conference schedule (and it's the one I'm going to). It should be a good Big Ten vs Pac-10 match up and is a 2:30 regional ABC/ESPN game. I've already got a good black Iowa t-shirt (who doesn't )that I wore to the Penn State game last year, but if you want the official blackout shirt you can find it here.
